Google announces they will label any site that does not have an SSL certificate installed “Not Secure” starting January 1, 2017

SSL certificates ensure that data going to and from a site is encrypted. Google believes it is important to alert users that they cannot assume their information is safe on a site that is not encrypted so they have already started labelling sites. It premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and was short listed for Academy nomination.
